What can we do to build resilience?
It is entirely possible to build resilience straight away with techniques that work to calm the body’s nervous system. I will explain and practise along side, a number of different techniques that are easy to learn, and will start to build resilience with you from day one. Regular practice of these techniques will give an increased capacity to manage any experiences of overwhelming thoughts and emotion. It is important to try a number of different methods so as to find ones that are helpful for you and your life.
In knowing a little about the ways in which the brain functions, it is possible for us to understand what is happening when we feel overwhelmed – with thoughts and emotions – and to take steps to build our capacity to gain some control in our reactions to the events in our life.
These are ways of managing that we use for the rest of our lives, and not just whilst in therapy. I will support you to incorporate these into your life – it only takes a few minutes each day – and over time, it will be possible to remember to use these when you really need them. Even thought I think it’s important to have these to hand during the time in-between appointments, this does not mean you are resolving things on your own. I believe that none of us are broken – it is just that we need information and support which unfortunately we do not usually get elsewhere. In addition to regular use of techniques, EMDR is a type of therapy that can help our brain to process the emotion from past events which may be influencing how we react to things now, and may be holding us back from living the life we would love.
